Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat’s treatment like with you, Steve?I’m a very supportive and empathic person. I try to put myself in your shoes to see your life is from your perspective. Although I can be directive, hostile confrontation doesn’t occur in my office. I find it better to creative a supportive atmosphere where we can calmly discuss your situation and possibilities for change.
Is abstinence required if I have a substance abuse problem?I take an abstinence emphasis approach. Abstinence is really the best approach for any substance use problem. The question is where is the person at in regard to making a change in their drinking and/ or drug use. One way to look at motivation for change is what the person is committed to doing about their problem. Just like a medical doctor would not kick a diabetic out of their clinic for not managing their disease, I strive to keep clients in the change process until they have reached their outcome goal. Are you covered by insurance?Since I’m new to the area, I’m in the process of getting on the insurance panels. As for now, I can give you a superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. I take check, cash and credit card. Treatment sessions must be paid at time of service. How long does treatment last? How often do we meet?Treatment sessions are generally scheduled weekly and last as long as necessary to accomplish your goals. One brilliant family therapist I met referred to his work as emergency road service. Once you’re back on the road and headed in the right direction, there’s no need for me. I don’t think building dependence on the therapist is a good thing. |
